Why your dog’s stools are firm one day and loose the next

If you’re tired of playing poop roulette every morning, here’s what’s going on in his gut, and how you can see a difference in about 7 days.

By Christine Colamonico, veterinarian and cofounder of Jope

4 min read.

One day his stool is firm.
The next day it’s loose.
The day after, firm again, like nothing happened.

And everybody makes it sound so simple. They’ll tell you all you need is the right food. Or a probiotic chew. Or a spoonful of pumpkin.

So maybe you tried a new food.
Maybe you tried a chew.
Maybe you tried something else.
A good week. Then another dead end.

And here you are, still playing poop roulette every morning. You still have no idea which poop you’re getting today.

The things you’ve tried might firm his stool up for a while. But it keeps coming back. Because they don’t address the root of the problem.

Here’s the REAL problem.

None of this is an accident

Not the good week.
Not the bad week.
Not even the firm stool that turns loose by the next walk.

The reason this happens has nothing to do with the brand of food, the flavor of chew or how careful you are.

It has everything to do with what happens inside his gut.

Because your dog’s gut works differently than you think.

Before anything he eats becomes a stool, billions of bacteria in his gut have to finish the job.
Some days those bacteria are well balanced, and he has a firm stool.
Other days it’s the complete opposite.
A transparent dog illustration showing the digestive system and a diagram of balanced versus off-balance gut bacteria.

And most of what you’ve tried changes what goes into his gut. It doesn’t change the bacteria that process it.

That’s why good weeks and bad weeks keep taking turns.

Now here’s the good news

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take him out, and already know which poop you’re getting?

It’s possible to support firm stools, day after day, by giving those bacteria what they need to stay in balance.

And when you start doing this, his gut gets the same help every single day.

That’s the shortcut to the stool you want.

Firm, formed, and the same on Thursday as it was on Monday.

3 things in 1 small capsule

So we took 3 highly specific things that work naturally with his gut.
And we put them in 1 small capsule.

A stylized 3D rendering of a mitochondrion's cross-section in translucent blue and purple against a black background.
1 · Probiotic

The first is a probiotic strain called Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415.

It has been tested in 6 clinical studies, 3 in dogs and 3 in cats.

And it’s authorized by the European Food Safety Authority.

2 · Fiber

Then the 2nd is FOS.

A plant fiber your dog can’t digest.
It passes through to the good bacteria and feeds them.

3 · Fiber

Then the 3rd is acacia gum.

A slower fiber that reaches further along the colon.
It feeds good bacteria there too, and supports stool consistency.

The strain and the 2 fibers that feed it go in together, on purpose.
This exact combination was tested in a study that followed 773 shelter dogs.

So you have a choice.

You could go and find these 3 separately.

Or you can use the capsule Jope’s co-founders built around them, after going through more than 20 probiotic candidates.

It’s called Jope Synbiotic GB-01® Gut Balance.

It’s veterinarian formulated, and it does one thing, and one thing only.

You twist it open and sprinkle it on the food he already eats.

Why a capsule, and not a chew

What many parents don’t realize is that a powder in a capsule is a whole other breed of probiotic.

There’s a big difference between a capsule and a probiotic chew.

Probiotic chew

—

A chew has to taste like a snack.

—
So it carries glycerin, flours, binders, flavorings and preservatives.
—
And many chews use strains with little or no published data in dogs.

GB-01® capsule

✓

A capsule doesn’t have to taste like anything.

✓
So the powder inside GB-01® has 1 inactive ingredient.

In about 7 days, you can see the difference

In dog studies on this strain, stool quality improved in under 7 days.

Just like Martin, whose dog Buffy had “always had issues with loose stools”.

★★★★★

“Within a week we were seeing a massive improvement in her bowel movements and now, after a month, she has almost no bowel issues.”

Martin H.C.

“

The best part?

It only takes a few seconds a day.
And you don’t even have to change anything else in his bowl.

And Martin isn’t the only one

There’s another group of dog parents who handle loose stools differently.
They give GB-01® every day.

Just like Julie, who had “tried many other brands”.

★★★★★

“His poops are firmer and he seems to have less gas and bloating.”

Julie D.

“

And just like Sarah and her dog Jazz.

★★★★★

“I honestly thought I wouldn’t find a solution for my dog’s loose stools… This synbiotic finally brought some stability to my dog’s gut. So thankful.”

Sarah and Jazz

You might have doubts

So let’s look at every one of them together.

You might doubt that this is any different from the last thing you tried.

Before, you probably changed what goes into his gut.
The one thing you were missing was help for the bacteria that process it.

You might doubt that it will work for your dog.

This strain has 6 clinical studies behind it, and one of them followed 773 shelter dogs.
And in about 7 days, you can see the difference for yourself.

You might doubt that he’ll eat it.
The powder has no flavoring, and it goes on the food he already eats.

And because every dog is different, GB-01® comes with a 90 day satisfaction guarantee.

So there’s little risk in starting today.

But what if we’re right?

What if his stool on Thursday looks like his stool on Monday?

Incredible gut support for large breeds—my Rhodesian Ridgebacks love it!

I cannot say enough good things about the Jope Synbiotic GB-01 Gut Balance Probiotic. I have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Maxx and Lucilla, and keeping their sensitive digestive systems balanced is a top priority for our household. Since putting them both on this synbiotic, it has become an essential part of our daily wellness routine.
What I appreciate most about this supplement is the high-quality, filler-free formula. It combines clinically backed prebiotics and probiotics to truly optimize gut health from the inside out. It comes in convenient powder capsules that are incredibly easy to sprinkle right over their food, and my dogs absolutely love the taste—they devour it without any hesitation!
We have seen such fantastic, consistent results with their digestion that I recently increased our subscription to a bulk six-month supply. Knowing this formula is veterinarian-developed gives me complete peace of mind. I am actively recommending Jope to all of my friends with dogs!

Great supplement

I have seen a big difference in my Labrador Retriever who has had GI issues since he was a baby. His poops are firmer and he seems to have less gas and bloating. He has been on this supplement for approximately 4months. We have tried many other brands but this seems to work the best! I would highly recommend 😊

Noticed a genuine improvement within a week

My youngest dog, Buffy, has always had issues with loose stools and an upset stomach. We had tried different supplements over the years but nothing worked. Within a week we were seeing a massive improvement in her bowel movements and now, after a month, she has almost no bowel issues. I wish I had known about Jope Synbiotic GB-01 sooner. So many years of avoidable butt washes, which she hates more than I do!

The product is super easy to use, just sprinkle and mix it into her dog food. Worth every penny.
