Dog activity tracking: CSOM & trackers
When it comes to your dog's health, measuring is caring. In this article, we will explore the ways pet parents can monitor their dog's health with useful tools that go beyond casual observation.
Customer Specific Objective Measure (CSOM)
The CSOM, originally developed for human medicine, is a personalized tracking form designed to help you monitoring your dog's joint health and mobility. By completing this form every two weeks for two months, you can gain valuable insights into your dog's mobility, behavior, and overall well-being.
The CSOM is integrated into our Paws In Motion™ program as a key element to track your pup's progress. You can register to receive your personalized CSOM form on this link.
Jope CSOM
Here at Jope, our veterinarians adapted the Client-Specific Outcome Measures (CSOM) from human medicine to help you better assess your pup's mobility progress and CSOM is a key element of our Paws In Motion™ program.
To get started with your own personnalized CSOM form, click this link to complete your onboarding form.
With the CSOM in our Paws in Motion™ Program, you can track the evolution from a high score (which indicates several signs were highly present and is not ideal) to a very low score (which is great, as it shows progress). For example, Griffin’s mom monitored his mobility score while he was on Jope and undergoing physiotherapy.
If you use Jope preventatively, you're doing a great job proactively helping your dog's mobility, and this tracker won't apply to your pup.
Aside from the CSOM form that helps you keep tabs on your pup's mobility, wearable activity trackers are another valuable tools for monitoring your dog's health.
What is an activity tracker for dogs?
Activity trackers for dogs come in various forms and types, inspired by our humans and their Apple Watches!
For dogs, they offer a simple and consistent way to monitor your pet's health, which could be super helpful for your vet in getting the full picture. While they are watches for hoomans, they are often collars for pups.
How do activity trackers for dogs work?
Accelerometers & captors provide pet owners with an unlimited range of data, from real time location updates, how many calories your dog is using and exercise levels. This device type works the following way:
-
Accelerometers and other sensors within the tracker capture movements and other data.
-
These movements are translated into distinct signals linked to sleep, scratching, running, or jumping.
-
Interpretation of these signals through an app allows for easy comprehension.
Increasing healthy activity levels can signify an improvement in your dog's well-being.
Are activity tracker scientifically proven?
YES. A 2010 Vet study revealed a significant difference in activity data measured by trackers for dogs on NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) vs. placebo.
Studies consistently show a strong link between arthritis-related pain and tracked activity.
Trackers aren't just for dogs. Early 2007 evaluations proved effective for monitoring feline activity, too.
How activity trackers can help your dog?
Activity trackers are useful to collect data on different activities that your dog engaged in and monitor mobility and joint pain symptoms.
It can assist in assessing your dog's activity, thus aiding in monitoring their joint health (especially after surgery or in the context of arthritis). But it can also:
-
Monitor your dog's heart and lung functions and share the data with your vet.
-
Assess specific diseases such as epilepsy (shaking) or dermatitis (scratching).
-
Alert you when your dog begins to exhibit symptoms or isn't feeling well.
Disclaimer: It does not substitute for veterinary care and diagnostic!
Are all activity trackers created equal?
Trackers can have different objectives: geolocalization (GPS) or health trackers (mobility, cardiac activity, behaviour, or sleep).
For health trackers, it's vital to select trackers supported by robust data and when possible scientific studies for reliability. Ensure that you set up health alerts in the app to be notified about changes in your dog's behavior or wellbeing.
Consider reviews for battery life, ease of use and additional features when choosing a tracker.
Fun fact: More and more pup parents are telling us they've noticed a boost in their dog's activity tracked by their collar after using Jope! And this is out ultimate objective.
Whatever tracker you choose, make regular measurements a part of your routine— it's a small step that makes a big difference in your pup's life!
Activity trackers are great for monitoring the positive progress with your Jope Hip & Joint supplement!
